The hearing focused on basic digital life skills necessary to meet the challenges of the digital age and on how digital technologies enrich learning in a variety of ways and offer a broad range of learning opportunities (e.g. citizenship and media literacy, including visual literacy).

As technological change continues to accelerate; the digital economy is rapidly permeating the whole of the world economy, making digital skills key for almost everyone. In everyday life, basic administrative practices and social interaction often presuppose basic levels of digital competence. In the workplace, automation, robotisation and digitalisation will have an impact on existing jobs.
Therefore, schools need to prepare students for more rapid economic and social change than ever before, for jobs that have not yet been created, to use technologies that have not yet been invented, and to solve social problems that we do not yet know will arise. In fact, all forms of education and lifelong learning may need to be adjusted to take advantage of new digital technologies.
