Appointment of the European Data Protection Supervisor for the new Term 2019-2024

In accordance with article 53 of Regulation (EU) no 2018/1725 (Data Protection Regulation for EU Institutions) “the European Parliament and the Council shall appoint the European Data Protection Supervisor by common accord for a term of five years, on the basis of a list drawn up by the Commission following a public call for candidates. The list of candidates drawn up by the Commission shall be public and shall consist of at least three candidates.

On the basis of the list drawn up by the Commission, the competent committee of the European Parliament may decide to hold a hearing in order to enable it to express a preference. On 30 October 2019, the European Commission transmitted to the European Parliament and the Council the short list of candidates in order to enable the two appointing authorities to conduct their own internal procedures and appoint by common accord the European Data Protection Supervisor. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, which is the competent committee for EU data protection law, held, therefore, individual public hearings for each of the short listed candidates for the appointment of the European Data Protection Supervisor The candidates shortlisted by the European Commission were (in alphabetical order): Mr Yann PADOVA, Mr Endre SZABÓ and Mr Wojciech WIEWIÓROWSKI. The hearing took place on 25 November 2019 in Strasbourg.
