Hearing on cross-border restitution of looted arts

Cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars

On 3 December 2019, the JURI Committee will host a public hearing on "Cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars". The event is organized as a follow-up to the European Parliament resolution of 17 January 2019 on cross-border restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and wars (2017/2023 (INI)).

Leading experts from a variety of national contexts from within and beyond Europe will discuss various aspects of restitution of cultural property with the aim to look at ways to ensure fair and just solutions for the return of looted art.They will provide opinions on the future actions required to ensure standard processes for making and pursuing claims, due diligence standards, and shared definitions of what constitutes loss both between and even within countries. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions to renowned experts in the area.

IMCO/ITRE hearing of Commissioner-designate Thierry Breton

The Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) participated as an associated committee in the hearing of Commissioner-designate for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, that took place on Thursday, 14 November 2019 from 13:00 to 16:00.

Mr Breton's portfolio includes leading the work on a coordinated European approach on artificial intelligence and on the new Digital Services Act, SMEs, implementation and enforcement of rules, intellectual property regime that is to be coherent, fit for the digital age and support Europe's competitiveness, all areas in which JURI has a competence and contributes expertise.

This In-depth Analysis resumes the possible scenarios concerning several Intellectual Property provisions of EU and international law in the event of a withdrawal of the United Kingdom with or without a proper withdrawal agreement. It tries to clarify the question how Brexit may affect the entry into force of the new European Patent with Unitary effect (EPUE), especially, if the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) can enter into force, even in case the UK has withdrawn from the EU.
