Commissioners-designates hearings: commitments briefings available
Committees 06-12-2019 - 08:42
Parliament’s Policy Departments and Economic Governance Support Unit have produced a series of briefings on salient points and essential commitments made by the Vice-Presidents- and Commissioners-designate at their respective hearings. These briefings have also been compiled in one document and are the main feature of the latest Policy Departments’ Monthly Highlights. An exhaustive list of all commitments made by the candidates is available through the full verbatim reports of each hearing.
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will hold a meeting with Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, on 9 December 2019. The debate will focus on the Commissioner’s future plans in the policy areas that fall under her responsibility as Member of the newly appointed Commission, notably asylum and migration, security, and Schengen.
Following a new proposal from the Finnish Council Presidency, the Budgets Committee will discuss the EU's next long-term budget for 2021-2027, on 12 December 2019. This new version of the so-called “negotiating box” also includes figures. Parliament adopted its interim report on the topic in November 2018, including concrete figures for programmes and proposals to overhaul the EU's own resources system. The EP confirmed and updated its negotiating mandate in its resolution of October 2019.
A workshop looking into ways of simplifying the Stability and Growth Pact will be held for the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, on 11 December. The EU fiscal framework has been claimed to be too complex and an assessment by the European Commission is expected soon. Organised by the Economic Governance Support Unit, the workshop will allow experts to present their views based on recent studies prepared on the request of Parliament and recent findings of the European Fiscal Board.
