Workshop on “How could the Stability and Growth Pact be simplified?” - 11.12.19

The workshop is organised by the Economic Governance Support Unit for the ECON Committee on 11 December 2019 at 16.30. The EU fiscal framework has often been claimed to be too complex and an assessment by the European Commission is expected soon. During the workshop, three prominent experts (C. Cottarelli, F. Heinemann and G. Kopits) will present their views based on studies prepared on the request of the EP. Furthermore, N. Thygesen will present the recent findings by the European Fiscal Board.
Public Hearing with the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB - 12.12.19

On Thursday 12 December 2019, the second ordinary public hearing this year in the framework of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) will take place with Mr Andrea Enria, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB. Topics to be addressed include an update on risk reduction in the banking sector, the finalisation of Basel III and the future of the Banking Union.In addition, financial technology and innovation in the banking sector and Brexit preparedness are topics to be discussed.
Public hearing with Elke König, Chair of the Single Resolution Board - 03.12.19

On 3 December at 14.30, ECON welcomed Elke König, Chair of the SRB, for her second appearance before the Committee in the new parliament. The public hearing was organised in the framework of the Regulation establishing the Single Resolution Mechanism and of the Agreement between the European Parliament and the SRB on the practical modalities of the exercise of democratic accountability over the exercise of the tasks conferred on the Single Resolution Board.
Presentation of the report of the next CMU High-Level Group - 04.12.19

On Wednesday 4 December 2019 at 10.00, the Chair (Mr Fabrice Demarigny) and one of the co-Chairs (Ms Corien Wortmann-Kool) of the Next CMU High-Level Group presented the report of the Group to the Committee (the meeting was webstreamed). The Next CMU High-Level Group was established on 16 May 2019 by Finance Ministers of France, Germany and the Netherlands, and later joined by representatives of Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden.
Monetary dialogue with ECB President, Christine Lagarde - 02.12.19

This was the first Monetary Dialogue in ECON with the new President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde. She presented the perspectives of the economy in the euro area and next steps of the ECB’s monetary policy, based on the recent decisions taken by the Governing Council. Members of the ECON committee also had the opportunity to discuss about the perspectives of the European monetary union and financial stability in the euro area.
Christine Lagarde, European Central Bank President since 1 November, was heard for the first time in her new office by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee.
