Een commissie kan een hoorzitting met deskundigen beleggen wanneer zij deze noodzakelijk acht om een bepaalde zaak naar behoren te kunnen afhandelen. Hoorzittingen kunnen ook gezamenlijk door twee of meer commissies worden gehouden. De meeste commissies houden regelmatig hoorzittingen om deskundigen te horen en over kernzaken te kunnen discussiëren. On 4 December, the AGRI Committee, in association with the ENVI committee, organised a public hearing on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This meeting took place during the current legislative work on the CAP beyond 2020. Following 20 years of negotiations, the EU and Mercosur countries struck a political agreement in June 2019 which aims to bring political and economic relations between the trading partners closer together, and to create the world's biggest market (by population size), for goods and services. On 4 March at 16.30h, the Committee held a public hearing on the “Evolution of the Performance Framework in the Common Agricultural Policy”. This hearing fell within the current AGRI legislative work on the CAP beyond 2020. A shift towards a more performance-oriented CAP is indeed an important component of the reform package proposed by the European Commission. (Lees meer)

A hearing on New Breeding Techniques (NBTs) was organised in association with the ENVI committee. It is widely accepted that new crop varieties need to be developed to meet challenges such as climate change and the spread of plant diseases and an increasing number of plant breeding companies are already actively using NBTs. The committee meeting on 7 December consisted of the hearing on genetic diversity, conservation and crops wild relatives. Crop wild relatives are closely related to our cultivated crops, but grow naturally under a wide range of environmental conditions. They can be crossed with existing crops to produce varieties that are more adaptable to local climates. Furthermore they can be used to develop crop varieties with greater resilience to climate change. (Lees meer)
