Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the site of the European Parliament's Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
As the elected Chair of the delegation, I preside over our delegation's regular meetings and act as a Co-Chair of the JPC with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. JPC meetings may take place to three times per year, alternating between the European Parliament's working places (Brussels or Strasbourg) and Turkey.
The European Parliament has always attached great importance to close cooperation between Turkey and the European Union. I believe that continuous dialogue between our parliaments, mainly in the framework of the EU-Turkey JPC, is a fundamental part of this cooperation.
Besides being an important partner of the EU, Turkey is also a candidate country. We have always supported Turkey's efforts to join the European Union, and this is the reason why we expect Turkey to apply the highest standards of democracy, rule of law and human rights in all circumstances. Related questions are often debated during the joint meetings with Members of the Turkish parliament.
During this legislature we have sought constructive dialogue to strengthen relations between the Turkish Grand National Assembly and the European Parliament. Despite the obstacles encountered in recent years, I can vouch that Members of the European Parliament's Delegation to the EU-Turkey JPC are very keen on holding a joint meeting without further delay. We will invest all our efforts into making this happen.
