Resolution on the threat of demolition of Khan al-Ahmar and other Bedouin villages

The European Parliament adopted by 320 votes to 277 with 34 abstentions a resolution on Khan al-Ahmar and other Bedouin villages.

The resolution was tabled by the S&D, ALDE, Greens/EFA, and GUE/NGL groups.

Members called for the Israeli government to shelve the relocation plan that would lead to the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar and the forcible transfer of its population to another location. They joined their call to those of the VP/HR, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in this matter and considered it of the utmost importance that the EU continue to speak with one voice, and to remain steadfast on the issue. Parliament recalled that the Israeli army has issued demolition orders for all structures in the village of Khan al-Ahmar, which is made up of 32 families, and 173 persons in total, including 92 minors. The village is one of the 46 Bedouin communities that the UN considers to be at high risk of forcible transfer in the central West Bank.

Situation in Gaza Strip

Parliament noted the violence following the Great March of Return, a six-week weekly mass protest, which began on 30 March 2018 in the Gaza Strip, organised by civil society groups, during which close to 30 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2 000 have been wounded, including many children and women. It supported the calls for independent investigations into these violent events, and that the intentional use of lethal force against protesters who do not pose an imminent threat to life or serious injury violates international human rights law and in the context of occupation is a serious breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Parliament took note of the Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism established by the Israel Defence Forces to review IDF actions.

Achieving the two-state solution in the Middle East

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on achieving the two-state solution in the Middle East.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ECR, ALDE and Greens/EFA and other groups.

Recalling that achieving peace in the Middle East remains a key priority for the international community, Parliament reiterated its strong support for the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, with the secure State of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian State living side by side in peace and security.

Members strongly opposed all actions that undermine the viability of the two-state solution. They condemned all acts of violence, acts of terrorism against Israelis.

Stressing that settlements are illegal under international law, Parliament condemned the continuation of, and called on the Israeli authorities to immediately halt and reverse, the settlement policy.
