DNAT Chair Tom Vandenkendelaere and DNAT Member Sándor Rónai attended the Rose-Roth-Seminar in Stockholm, 23-24 October 2023. NATO PA parliamentarians held insightful discussions on the challenges facing the Transatlantic community and NATO partners at risk such as Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova or Bosnia and Herzegovina. The two-days seminar brought together more than 100 participants from national parliaments, governments, the diplomatic community and academia and it was also addressed by former Swedish Prime and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, prominent members of the current government of Sweden (Foreign, Defence and EU Affairs Ministers) and the Chair of the NATO Military Committee. The programme was supplemented by a visit to the Livgardet (Life Guards Regiment), the largest unit of the Swedish Armed Forces.

NATO PA: 69th Annual Session, Copenhagen (Denmark), 6-9 October 2023

The 69th Annual Session of the NATO PA took place from 6-9 October 2023 in Copenhagen (Denmark).

Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was presented with the 2023 "Women for Peace and Security Award".

NATO PA Spring Session, Luxembourg (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), 19-22 May 2023

The Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) took place from 19 to 22 May 2023 in Luxembourg (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg). The following MEPs participated: Tom VANDENKENDELAERE, DNAT Chair (EPP, BE), Rasa JUKNEVICIENE (EPP, Lithuania, Juozas OLEKAS (S&D, Lithuania), Sándor RÓNAI (S&D, Hungary) and Mazaly AGUILAR (ECR, Spain).

  • Allied support to Ukraine, NATO membership perspectives
  • Russia and its war of aggression against Ukraine
  • NATO's strategic adaptation, defence spending
  • EU-NATO cooperation
  • NATO Centre for Democratic Resilience

NATO Parliamentary Assembly: 68th Annual Session, Madrid, 18-21 November 2022

The 68th Annual Session of the NATO PA took place from 18 to 21 November 2022 in Madrid (Spain).

The following topics were discussed:
  • war in Ukraine, Russian aggression
  • NATO's strategic orientation and adaptation
  • EU-NATO cooperation
  • NATO accession of Sweden and Finland
  • cyber-resilience
  • global warming
  • food crisis, ....

NATO PA Spring Session, Vilnius (Lithuania), 27-30 May 2022

The NATO PA Spring Session was originally scheduled to take place in Kyiv (Ukraine) but was moved to Vilnius (Lithuania) due to the war of aggression by Russia on Ukraine.
It was the first full-fledged session of the NATO PA since the Covid pandemic.

The following topics were discussed:
  • war in Ukraine, Russian aggression, Allied support and implications on the European security order
  • NATO's broader adaptation and revision of NATO's Strategic Concept
  • NATO aspirations of Sweden and Finland
  • NATO's role in the Indo-Pacific region
  • terrorism, ...

NATO Parliamentary Assembly: 67th Annual Session, Lisbon, 8-11 October 2021

Due to the pandemic situation and the sanitary restrictions the DNAT Chair Tom VANDENKENDELAERE attended the 67th Annual Session of the NATO PA only.

The key themes of this session included:
  • a focus on the update of the Alliance's Strategic Concept
  • a reminder that democratic values remain at the heart of the Alliance
  • a call for NATO to conduct a 'clear-eyed' assessment of Afghan shortcomings
  • a call for greater NATO engagement in the Middle East and North Africa
NATO PA's first ever award for "Women for Peace and Security" was received by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

NATO Parliamentary Assembly 65th Annual Session, London, 11-14 October 2019

Lead by Kris PEETERS, Chair, a delegation of DNAT Members including Nathalie LOISEAU (Chair of SEDE and Vice-Chair) participated in the 65th NATO PA Annual Session, in London between 11 and 14 October 2019. This year NATO marks its 70th anniversary. At a time of acute geopolitical instability and while citizens demand more security, the Assembly discussed topics such as NATO cybersecurity defence and deterrence, economic sanctions, commitment to NATO's founding principles, security challenges in Africa and recent development in Afghanistan.
