Irish MEPs reflect on International Women's Day 2019

To mark International Women's Day, Irish MEPs Mairead McGuinness, Vice President of the European Parliament, Lynn Boylan and Sean Kelly give their reflections on the significance of IWD in a series of short video clips.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, selected by Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality is ‘‘Women's power in politics".

Equality between women and men is one of the objectives of the European Union. Over time, legislation, case law and changes to the Treaties have helped shore up this principle and its implementation in the EU. The European Parliament has always been a fervent defender of the principle of equality between men and women. It has played a significant role in supporting equal opportunity policies, in particular through its Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM).

In a non-legislative report on “Gender Mainstreaming in the EP”, adopted in January 2019, MEPs pointed to the importance of increasing the presence of the under-represented gender, often women, on electoral lists, and strongly encouraged the European political parties and their party members to ensure a gender-balanced representation of candidates for elections to the EP in 2019 by means of zipped lists or other methods such as parity lists. They also encouraged political groups to adopt a gender mainstreaming strategy. In the present legislature, women represent 36.1% of MEPs.
