Election of the Ombudsman: Hearing in the Petitions Committee

Emily O’Reilly, current European Ombudsman who has been nominated to stand for re-election, will present her priorities in a hearing organised by the Petitions committee on Tuesday afternoon at 15 (Room ASP A1G-3) ahead of election of the Ombudsman for the 2014-2019 parliamentary term. The hearing is open to all Members of the European Parliament. The Ombudsman is elected by Parliament at the start of each parliamentary term. Ms O’Reilly is the only candidate declared admissible and this hearing will take place with a view to her re-election to the post.

Parliament will elect the new Ombudsman by secret ballot on Tuesday, 16 December 2014.

You can watch the hearing via EP Live.

The post of Ombudsman was established in 1995 with a mandate to investigate cases of maladministration by the EU institutions, including lack of transparency and refusal to provide information or documents.

Emily O’Reilly (Ireland) was elected on 3 July 2013 after her predecessor, Nikiforos Diamaddouros (Greece), retired.
