Most MEPs are members of at least 2 committees of the Parliaments 20 committees in which Parliaments positions are prepared on Commission proposals, for example for new EU legislation. There is a committee on Transport, another one on Agriculture, Environment, Consumer policy etc.  Parliaments position is laid down in so-called reports drafted by a "rapporteur.

On receipt of proposals of the European Commission, committees decide which political group may draft the report. Then, the group appoints the rapporteur who drafts the position of the Committee. In general, the committees hold meetings once or twice per month and discuss proposals of the European Commission, debate draft reports which contain the Committees position of these proposals and amend and vote these draft reports.

After being adopted by the committee, the draft reports are forwarded to the Plenary Session of the European Parliament where the report finally are adopted. Regularly, the committees hold public hearings or invite the Commissioners or representatives of the rotating Council presidency. For the committees websites click here.

The political composition of the committees reflects the representation of the groups in the European Parliament. Chairpersons of the committees are elected every 2,5 years.
