The EU and its Member States have signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and use its definition of disability as a common reference at EU level. There is no other harmonised definition of disability in the EU. Although a wide variety of statistical surveys are available in terms of questions asked and population surveyed, a complete statistical assessment of disability in the EU does not yet exist. However, the annual Eurostat statistics on income and living conditions ...

World Cancer Day 2023

Накратко 31-01-2023

Cancer can affect everyone, regardless of age, gender or social status and puts immense pressure on European health systems. Fighting cancer is one of the priorities of the European Health Union. Delivering better long-term care for patients living with cancer also means reducing significant disparities, both between and within Member States. World Cancer Day, marked every year on 4 February, reminds us that cancer is a huge health threat to our society.

Living in the EU: Education and Health

Накратко 30-04-2019

The European Union complements national health and education policies, in particular those with a cross-border dimension. The main responsibility for health and education, however, lies with the governments of its Member States. This combination explains the spread in government expenditure on national welfare policies among the Member States, and in particular in individual direct payments for health. In terms of the gender gap in the area, women with tertiary education still suffer employment gaps ...

Excessive body weight ('overweight') and excessive body fat ('obesity') affect more than one in two adults in the EU and the rates have been rising steadily. The causes are genetic, behavioural, cultural and socioeconomic and are mainly driven by an unbalanced diet and physical inactivity. Furthermore, these conditions are major risk factors for serious chronic illnesses, and account for roughly 7% of EU Member States' healthcare expenditure. EU prevention initiatives broadly target nutrition and ...

EU Alcohol Strategy revisited

Накратко 20-04-2015

The EU had an Alcohol Strategy in place from 2006 to 2012, but the European Commission did not immediately renew it, despite having earlier planned to do so. An assessment report found that overall the Strategy had provided positive added value, although its aims had not been fully achieved. The ENVI Committee is now urging the Commission to start work immediately on a new EU Alcohol Strategy for the coming years. The plenary is due to vote during the April session to endorse this call for action ...

Combating maternal mortality

Briefing 01-06-2011

Despite the UN pledge to reduce the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by three-quarters by 2015, more than 350 000 maternal deaths occur every year, 99% of them in developing countries. Of all the Millennium Development Goals, least progress has been made on the one to improve maternal health. In the EU, the average MMR has been low and relatively steady in recent years. There are differences, however, between Member States (MS). Whereas, to some extent, they may be explained by unreliability of statistical ...
