Postup evropské integrace změnil roli vnitrostátních parlamentů. Mezi Evropským parlamentem a vnitrostátními parlamenty byly vytvořeny různé nástroje spolupráce, které mají zajistit efektivní demokratickou kontrolu evropského zákonodárství na všech úrovních. EU, USA a Kanada vyznávají společné hodnoty demokracie, lidských práv a hospodářské a politické svobody a rovněž mají společné zájmy v oblasti zahraniční politiky a bezpečnosti. Evropská politika sousedství (EPS) se vztahuje na Alžírsko, Egypt, Izrael, Jordánsko, Libanon, Libyi, Maroko, Palestinu, Sýrii a Tunisko. Skládá se z dvoustranných politik uplatňovaných mezi EU a deseti partnerskými zeměmi, které doplňuje regionální rámec spolupráce – Unie pro Středomoří. EU od roku 2011 v rámci EPS více podporuje demokratickou přeměnu v zemích jižního sousedství, čímž reaguje na povstání, která v těchto zemích proběhla. V roce 2015 provedla další přezkum EPS.

Vztahy EU s Latinskou Amerikou a Karibikem mají mnoho rozměrů a realizují se na různých úrovních. Evropská unie spolupracuje s celým regionem prostřednictvím summitů hlav států či předsedů vlád, přičemž s Karibikem, Střední Amerikou, Andským společenstvím, sdružením MERCOSUR a jednotlivými zeměmi ji spojují dohody a politický dialog.

EU má s Radou pro spolupráci v Perském zálivu (což je regionální organizace sdružující Bahrajn, Katar, Kuvajt, Omán, Saúdskou Arábii a Spojené arabské emiráty) a s Jemenem dohodu o spolupráci a s Irákem dohodu o partnerství a spolupráci. V současné době EU nemá žádné smluvní vztahy s Íránem, je si však vědoma velkého potenciálu širších vztahů s touto zemí.
