Zwischen 2020 und 2022 wurden im Rahmen der Europäischen Bürgerinitiative (EBI) „Stop Finning – Stop the Trade“ (Abtrennen von Flossen und Handel damit stoppen) in der gesamten EU mehr als eine 1,1 Millionen Unterschriften gesammelt. In der EBI wird ein Verbot des Handels mit Haifisch- und Rochenflossen innerhalb und aus der EU gefordert. Das einer Anhörung zu dem Thema, die im März 2023 stattfand, wird das Europäische Parlament die Initiative während der März-I-Plenartagung erörtern.
