La Comisión Europea propuso aumentar el nivel de protección de los consumidores frente a las prácticas comerciales desleales. El 19 de septiembre de 2023, los colegisladores alcanzaron un acuerdo provisional sobre la propuesta de modificación de las dos Directivas clave en este ámbito. Este acuerdo ha sido aprobado por la Comisión de Mercado Interior y Protección del Consumidor (IMCO) y se espera que el Parlamento vote el texto acordado en su sesión plenaria de enero de 2024.
