ELi toiduohutuspoliitikal on kaks eesmärki: kaitsta inimeste tervist ja tarbijate huve ning soodustada Euroopa ühtse turu tõrgeteta toimimist. Seetõttu tagab Euroopa Liit kontrollistandardite kehtestamise (ja nende järgimise) sööda ja toiduainete hügieeni, looma- ja taimetervise valdkonnas ning toidu kaitseks keskkonnas olevate ainetega saastumise eest. Samuti reguleerib liit toidu ja sööda märgistamist.

During the March 2016 plenary session, a debate and vote will be held on the draft regulation establishing a new aid scheme for the supply of fruit and milk in schools. If adopted, the scheme will bring new impetus to efforts to encourage school children to eat healthily.

On 26 October 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that it has classified processed meat as 'carcinogenic to humans', and red meat as 'probably carcinogenic to humans'. Stakeholder responses have varied from putting things into perspective, to criticising the decision, to cautioning against alarmist reactions.

This note seeks to provide an initial analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the European Commission's Impact Assessment (IA) accompanying the proposal on the aid scheme for the supply of fruit and vegetables, bananas and milk in the educational establishments. Overall, the IA appears to be well documented and researched. This report summarises the presentations and discussions at the Workshop on ‘Trans Fats’, held at the European Parliament in Brussels, on Tuesday, 5 November, 2013. The aim of the workshop was to discuss the risks posed by trans fats in human health and to exchange views on the existing solutions to this issue. The workshop was hosted by MEP Ms Glenis WILLMOTT (S&D, UK), Co-chair of the Health Working Group within the ENVI Committee.
