Workshop on Novel Foods

Selvitys 10-09-2008

The future adoption of a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on "Novel Foods" will regulate their placing on the market. It will lay down rules for authorisation, supervision, labelling and use of novel foods. The area of novel foods is fully harmonised in the EU. Non-legislative action based, for example, on a code of good practice or guidelines could not give sufficient protection and would lack legal certainty. The safe use of novel food depends on pre-market safety evaluations and often on permitted conditions of use of these substances, therefore recommendations or self-regulations would not guarantee the protection of consumer's health. The workshop will assess the different elements mentioned in the Commission proposal COM(2007)872 on Novel Foods. The workshop should involve experts to advice Members of the Parliamentary ENVI Committee, giving a balanced picture of the variety of views seriously considered among professionals in this field.
