EU on vuosien mittaan siirtynyt pois työvoimavaltaisten alhaisen hintatason tuotteiden tuotannosta erikoistuakseen korkean hintatason merkkituotteisiin. EU:n talous on avointa, joten kaupankäynti on sille elintärkeää.
