Al fine di ammodernare il quadro Prüm, nel 2021 la Commissione ha presentato una proposta di regolamento sullo scambio automatizzato di dati per la cooperazione di polizia, che fa parte del pacchetto sul "codice di cooperazione di polizia dell'UE". Durante la tornata di febbraio I è previsto il voto del Parlamento europeo sul testo definitivo del regolamento.
