Nustatytos specialios priemonės siekiant paremti labiausiai nutolusių Europos Sąjungos regionų, vadinamų atokiausiais regionais, vystymąsi. Šie regionai yra: Gvadelupa, Prancūzijos Gviana, Reunjonas, Martinika, Majotas ir Sen Martenas (Prancūzija), Azorai ir Madeira (Portugalija) ir Kanarų salos (Ispanija). Šia parama siekiama sumažinti kliūtis, susidarančias dėl atokios šių regionų geografinės padėties.
