Jeżistu miżuri speċifiċi fis-seħħ biex jiġi appoġġat l-iżvilupp tar-reġjuni l-aktar imbiegħda tal-Unjoni Ewropea, magħrufa bħala r-"reġjuni ultraperiferiċi": Guadeloupe, Guyana Franċiża, Réunion, Martinique, Mayotte, Saint-Martin (Franza), Gżejjer Azores u Madejra (Portugall) u Gżejjer Kanarji (Spanja). L-iskop ta' dan l-appoġġ huwa li jtaffi l-limitazzjonijiet ikkawżati mill-pożizzjoni ġeografika mbiegħda ta' dawn ir-reġjuni.

Imwaqqaf fl-1994 mir-Regolament tal-Kunsill (KE) Nru 1164/94, il-Fond ta' Koeżjoni jikkontribwixxi finanzjarjament għat-twettiq ta' proġetti marbuta mal-qasam tal-ambjent u tan-netwerks trans-Ewropej. Mill-2007, ġie awtorizzat ukoll biex jagħti sostenn lil proġetti fl-oqsma marbuta mal-iżvilupp sostenibbli, pereżempju l-effiċjenza fl-użu tal-enerġija u l-enerġija rinnovabbli.
