Fish labelling for consumers

Kort overzicht 12-10-2017

Since the end of 2014, consumers in the European Union (EU) have had access to better information when buying fishery and aquaculture products. Mandatory labels or markings for retail sale of seafood (including some types of processed seafood) must, in particular, include information on both the commercial and the scientific names of the species, whether it has been fished or farmed, the catch area or country of production, and the fishing gear used.

Aquaculture in the EU

Kort overzicht 03-10-2017

Aquaculture means the rearing of aquatic animals and the cultivation of aquatic plants and algae. While, at global level, this industry has undergone significant growth for several decades, in the EU, aquaculture production, focused on the farming of fish and shellfish for human consumption, is rather stagnating. Subject to diverse EU policies, such as environmental protection or animal and consumer health, the development of aquaculture largely depends on measures taken by national authorities. ...

The European Commission has proposed to include a number of binding recommendations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) in EU law, in so far as they are not yet included therein. After interinstitutional negotiations, the EP is now due to vote on a draft regulation on fisheries measures in the ICCAT area, with a view to reaching a first-reading agreement.

Following the approval, in June 2017, of the outcome of interinstitutional negotiations by the Committee on fisheries, the European Parliament is due to vote on a proposal for a regulation concerning the conservation of tuna and tuna-like species, and the management of fisheries targeting these stocks in the Atlantic Ocean (including adjacent seas such as the Mediterranean), with a view to reaching a first-reading agreement. This legislative proposal aims to transpose into EU law a number of binding ...

The European Parliament is due to decide a position in plenary in advance of interinstitutional negotiations on a legislative proposal for a multiannual plan to manage some fisheries in the North Sea. For its part, the Council adopted its general approach in April 2017. This plan would cover demersal species (i.e. species living close to the sea bottom) in the EU waters in the North Sea and some adjacent maritime areas. These stocks are exploited by various fishing fleets using various fishing gear ...

Aquaculture: Overview for the EU

Uitgebreide analyse 28-08-2017

EU aquaculture essentially consists of the farming of shellfish and fish, in salt and fresh water. Having to meet requirements on environmental protection, animal health and the quality of products for consumers, this sector struggles to hold its own in EU territories. The EU promotes the sustainable development of aquaculture activities, in particular through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, the financial instrument dedicated to supporting the Common Fisheries Policy guidelines. This financial ...

The €6 396.6 million European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) is the smallest of the European Structural and Investment Funds for the 2014-2020 period, but it is the major financial tool supporting the EU common fisheries policy (CFP). Slightly less than half of the Fund is dedicated to promoting sustainable fisheries and to fostering sustainable aquaculture. Another significant share contributes to proper implementation of the CFP, particularly for data collection and science-based needs, and ...

On 25 April 2017, the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries adopted its first reading report on a European Commission proposal for a regulation concerning the conservation of tuna and tuna-like species and the management of fisheries targeting these stocks in the Atlantic Ocean (including adjacent seas such as the Mediterranean). The committee also proposed to start negotiations with the Council on this basis. This legislative proposal aims to transpose into EU law a number of binding recommendations ...

Defining fishing vessels' characteristics

Kort overzicht 29-03-2017

One dimension of the EU common fisheries policy consists of managing the European fishing fleet and its overall fishing capacity. Rules on the conservation of fisheries resources may vary depending on the features of fishing vessels. During its April I plenary, the Parliament is expected to vote at first reading on a proposal to recast the rules regarding technical characteristics of fishing vessels.

Technical measures in fisheries govern the different fishing practices that can be used to catch fish, as well as the areas and seasons for fishing. Aimed at limiting unwanted catches or at reducing the impacts of fishing on nature, EU technical measures in fisheries have, over time, developed into a complex set of prescriptive measures, which do not fully achieve their objectives. The European Commission finalised, on 11 March 2016, a long-awaited proposal to overhaul a number of existing rules ...
