Electricity production from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is expanding rapidly in Europe and around the world. However, integrating these fluctuating sources into the grid is increasingly becoming a challenge for grid operators that need to match electricity supply with demand. Switching over to a new electricity market system where the demand would better adapt to the supply could be crucial for the success of the transition towards a low-carbon society.

Electricity production from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is expanding rapidly in Europe and around the world. This publication provides an overview of the potential impacts of laboratory meat on environment, public health and farming, and makes suggestions for anticipatory policy-making in this area.

In 2015 betrad het directoraat-generaal Parlementaire Onderzoeksdiensten (DG EPRS) van het Europees Parlement nieuw terrein met de publicatie "Tien technologieën die ons leven kunnen veranderen - potentiële effecten en beleidsimplicaties", waarbij elk hoofdstuk een bepaalde technologie in de schijnwerpers zet, waarbij ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de beloften en mogelijke negatieve gevolgen ervan alsook aan de rol die het Europees Parlement bij de vormgeving van deze ontwikkelingen kan en zou moeten ...

In 2015 betrad het directoraat-generaal Parlementaire Onderzoeksdiensten (DG EPRS) van het Europees Parlement nieuw terrein met de publicatie "Tien technologieën die ons leven kunnen veranderen - potentiële effecten en beleidsimplicaties", waarbij elk hoofdstuk een bepaalde technologie in de schijnwerpers zet, waarbij ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de beloften en mogelijke negatieve gevolgen ervan alsook aan de rol die het Europees Parlement bij de vormgeving van deze ontwikkelingen kan en zou moeten spelen. Deze nieuwe studie zet die werkzaamheden voort door tien aanvullende technologieën te presenteren die steeds meer de aandacht vereisen van de beleidsmakers. De onderwerpen van de huidige studie zijn gekozen om de uiteenlopende onderwerpen te weerspiegelen die door het STOA-panel van het Parlement zullen worden behandeld voor de achtste parlementaire termijn (2014-2019). Deze publicatie is niet alleen bedoeld om de aandacht te richten op deze tien bijzondere technologieën, maar ook om te bevorderen dat er verder wordt nagedacht over andere technologische ontwikkelingen die zich misschien nog in een vroeg stadium bevinden, maar op vergelijkbare wijze op korte of op lange termijn een gigantische impact kunnen hebben op ons leven.

Over the past century, cars have become an integral part of our society. They generally offer greater flexibility than alternative modes of transport, and they are affordable to a large proportion of people. Ever since cars were first mass-produced, they have almost exclusively been powered by ICEs (internal combustion engines), which burn fossil fuels, such as petrol and diesel, to provide the energy required to turn the cars’ wheels and perform auxiliary tasks. However, in recent years concerns about climate change and dependence on oil have led to a great deal of effort and attention being invested in developing alternative ways of providing this energy.
