World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October to promote awareness and action in support of those who suffer from hunger. The United Nations General Assembly designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste in order to promote global efforts towards meeting the UN sustainable development goals' target 12.3, where the aim is to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, and reduce food loss along the food production and supply chains.

This briefing follows up the commitments made by the commissioner since 2019.
