Between 2019 and 2021, the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) 'Save bees and farmers!' collected more than 1 million signatures. The ECI calls for a reduction in the use of pesticides, leading to a complete phasing-out by 2035. The European Commission has welcomed the initiative. The European Parliament, after a hearing held in January 2023, will discuss it during its March I plenary session.

The highlights of the October II plenary session included a debate on the conclusions of the last European Council meeting and the presentation of a new agenda for EU leaders, as well as the presentation of the 2018 Commission work programme. Members paid tribute to Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese journalist killed in a car bomb explosion on 16 October.

Glyphosate, one of the world's most widely used active substances in herbicides, has recently become the subject of controversy. The European Commission now proposes to renew its approval for 10 years. The ENVI committee has adopted a motion for a resolution calling for glyphosate to be phased out by 2020, and a vote on this issue is expected during the October II plenary session.

This report summarises the presentations and discussions of the workshop on the “EU’s pesticide risk assessment system: the case of glyphosate”, held at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday, 24 May 2016. A scientific controversy has recently erupted over diverging assessments of the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, one of the world's most widely used active substances in herbicides. Against this backdrop, the European Commission has proposed to renew the authorisation of glyphosate for 15 years. A motion for a resolution adopted by the ENVI Committee calling on the Commission to reconsider its proposal is expected to be tabled for plenary vote in April.
