EU:s östliga partnerskap, som inleddes 2009, omfattar sex före detta sovjetiska delstater: Armenien, Azerbajdzjan, Georgien, Moldavien, Ukraina och Vitryssland. Det inrättades för att stödja politiska, sociala och ekonomiska reformsträvanden i dessa länder i syfte att stärka demokratisering och goda styrelseformer, energitrygghet, miljöskydd och ekonomisk och social utveckling. Alla medlemmarna utom Vitryssland ingår i den parlamentariska församlingen Euronest.

By agreeing with Serbia on ways to normalise relations, a key demand of the EU, Kosovo took a major step on the path towards the EU in 2013. Kosovo has started negotiations on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU, with conclusion expected in spring 2014.
