Halting and reversing EU-driven deforestation: ENVI call for an EU legal framework

According to the Commission, the EU imports and consumes between 7 to 10 % of the global consumption of crops and livestock products associated with deforestation in the countries of origin. Ensuring that EU consumption is deforestation-free is thus an urgent priority. The rapporteur is recommending that the Commission presents, for the first time, a legislative proposal for mandatory due diligence for forest and ecosystem-risk commodities being placed on the Union market and presents an encompassing definition of "deforestation". Through the legislative own-initiative report, once adopted, the Commission would be compelled to follow-through on Parliament's request on the basis of Article 225 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).
