The compilations published on this page are thematic excerpts from a broad collection of almost 180 Fact Sheets prepared by the European Parliament's Policy departments and the Economic Governance Support Unit in relation to major topics included in the EP political and legislative agenda. The Fact Sheets are regularly updated and published in 23 languages and can be accessed through the link in the right-hand side column.

The aim of EU asylum policy is to harmonise asylum procedures in the Member States by establishing common arrangements. The Fact Sheet on asylum policy gives an overview of its legal basis and objectives, and of the achievements made. This compilation further includes Fact Sheets on: the EU immigration policy - which intends to establish a balanced approach to dealing with both regular and irregular immigration; and on border management policy.

EU Investing in its Transport Networks beyond 2020

The TFEU retains the trans-European networks (TENs) in the areas of transport, energy and telecommunications, first mentioned in the Maastricht Treaty, in order to connect all the regions of the EU. They are intended to contribute to the growth of the internal market and to employment, while pursuing environmental and sustainable development goals. These Fact Sheets give an overview of TEN policies, financing methods, project-funding criteria, and Parliament’s role in developing legislation.

Human rights and democracy

The European Union is committed to supporting democracy and human rights worldwide, in accordance with its founding principles of liberty, democracy and respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. As the only directly elected EU institution, the European Parliament is particularly committed to promoting democracy. The two Fact Sheets in this booklet present the EU’s role and engagement in promoting democracy.

Culture and education

This booklet contains a compilation of Fact Sheets on cultural aspects of the Union. These include: the dissemination of culture, the preservation of the European cultural heritage, multilingualism and linguistic diversity, the promotion of quality education and vocational training, the promotion of mutual recognition of diplomas, and the support of exchanges of young people within the EU and with third countries.

The single market is the EU’s greatest achievement. It is an area without internal borders in which the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital is, in principle, guaranteed. This compilation presents the issues related to the employment of workers, freedom of establishment and providing services and mutual recognition of diplomas and professional qualifications.

The European Union’s institutions and bodies, and the powers conferred on them, derive from the founding Treaties. The Union’s powers have evolved considerably over the years through the successive Treaties, as have its decision-making procedures. This compilation of Fact Sheets describes the sources and the scope of EU law, the various decision making procedures, as well as the procedure related to the adoption of the EU budget.

Social and employment policy

The promotion of employment, improved living and working conditions, proper social protection, dialogue between management and labour, the development of human resources with a view to lasting high employment and the combating of exclusion, are the common objectives of the EU and its Member States in the social and employment fields. This booklet includes Fact Sheets on these issues as well as on health and safety at work and equality of men and women in the marketplace.

Respect for fundamental rights in the European Union

This booklet presents issues related to the fundamental rights of EU citizens. The Charter of Fundamental Rights gathers all the rights of individuals in a single document, grouping them around several major principles: human dignity, fundamental freedoms, equality, solidarity, citizens’ rights and justice. EU citizens have the right to move freely within the EU and to petition Parliament or present Citizens’ Initiatives to the Commission on any matter in a field in which the EU has competence.

This compilation of Fact Sheets covers economic governance, general tax policy, and direct company taxation. Reference is made to, amongst other things, the country specific recommendations (CSRs) within the European Semester, and the establishment of a common consolidated corporate tax base (CCCTB), which could eliminate certain aggressive tax planning opportunities and most of the tax obstacles affecting the economic efficiency of the single market.
