2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU’s policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew its commitment a Human Rights Week has been organised by the European Parliament and the ENVI Committee held on 20 November an exchange of views (EoV) with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

Plant protection products (PPP) are 'pesticides' that protect crops or desirable or useful plants and contain at least an active substance. ENVI decided in March 2017 to draw up an implementation report on the PPP Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 to determine whether it was delivering on its stated objectives: to ensure a high level of protection for humans, animals and environment and to improve the functioning of the internal market through harmonisation.

Plastics have been widely used in our daily life due to their low cost and wide range of practical applications. However, plastics - and single-use plastics in particular - are often produced, used and discarded in a way that fails to capture the economic benefits of a circular approach and harms the environment. The impact of plastics is also causing growing public concern and there is an urgent need to tackle these problems.

On 22 march 2018, the Commission adopted a proposal for a regulation on persistent organic pollutants (hereinafter, “POPs”). Main aims of the proposal are to align European Union law to the most recent international regulations concerning POPs, as well as to align current EU legislation on POPs to the regime of delegated and implementing acts as introduced into the Union legal system by the Lisbon Treaty.
