On Monday and Thursday, ENVI Members voted on the first ENVI legislative own-initiative report on an EU legal framework to halt and reverse EU-driven global deforestation on the basis of article 225 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The ENVI Committee adopted the above-mentioned report with 45 votes in favour, 11 against and 25 abstentions.

The rationale for this report stems from the un-abating rate of deforestation worldwide: a phenomenon that has only worsened during the pandemic. It is estimated that EU consumption represents around 10% of global deforestation. Reversing deforestation will be key to protecting biodiversity, creating carbon sinks and sustainably supporting local communities.
