Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which posed a serious challenge to the work of Parliament, several measures were quickly adopted in order to ensure the continuation of the legislative and democratic life of the EU, while focusing on its response to the COVID-19 crisis. This Thematic Digest contains an overview of the principal debates held by Parliament’s committees and delegations, and of the decisions made as a result of their work, following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will vote on the report on gender equality in EU's foreign and security policy, on 16 July. It focuses on various aspects, describing how women and girls are particularly affected by violence, poverty, armed conflicts and climate change. The Committee will also vote on its opinion on the implementation of the Dublin III Regulation, stressing the importance of taking into account the needs of women and girls throughout the asylum procedure.

Jiří Šedivý - Chief Executive European Defence Agency

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold a debate with newly appointed Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency, Jiří Šedivý, on 16 July. The discussion focus on, amongst other things, priorities, various EU defence initiatives, and the means of sustaining EU capability development in times of disruptive challenges. A PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation) state of play will also be carried out as a preamble to the future strategic review.

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will look into the joint communication of the Commission and the EEAS entitled “Tackling Covid-19 disinformation - Getting the facts straight”, on 16 July. Afterwards, the Committee will go over the main findings of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency’s survey on LGBTI equality, with its Director Michael O’Flaherty. The survey involved almost 140,000 participants in the EU and North Macedonia and Serbia.

Parliament's committees will meet representatives of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union to discuss its priorities in relation to the committees' respective areas of responsibility. These meetings started taking place from 3 July 2020. The German Presidency started in the beginning of July and runs until the end of December 2020.

The Conference of Presidents (CoP) of the European Parliament updated the institution’s calendar of activities on 2 July, to take into account the continuing precautionary measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19. The full calendar is available on Parliament’s website.
