Education in the digital era
The hearing focused on basic digital life skills necessary to meet the challenges of the digital age and on how digital technologies enrich learning in a variety of ways and offer a broad range of learning opportunities (e.g. citizenship and media literacy, including visual literacy).
Therefore, schools need to prepare students for more rapid economic and social change than ever before, for jobs that have not yet been created, to use technologies that have not yet been invented, and to solve social problems that we do not yet know will arise. In fact, all forms of education and lifelong learning may need to be adjusted to take advantage of new digital technologies.

Scientific and academic culture to counter radicalism and fake news
The CULT Committee held a public hearing on the “Scientific and academic culture to counter radicalism and fake news”.
Fake news - and the accompanying problem of political radicalisation - are among the most disquieting and pressing challenges of today. One of the key issues addressed during the hearing were the options for avoiding public opinion being manipulated and steered by what is euphemistically described as "alternative truth". In particular, the five experts invited to the hearing examined how to meet the challenges of fake news through science and academia.

Crisis in the print media

Quality journalism comes at a cost and cannot be done properly by underpaid journalists in understaffed newsrooms. Is there a hidden threat to media pluralism?
