Negotiations with Council continued on Wednesday with a constructive eighth round of talks, during which EP negotiators confirmed their mandate on all points.

Budget MEPs want the EU to rise to the climate challenge and mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a vote on Wednesday on their position on the 2021 EU budget.

In a spirit of compromise, Parliament made a concrete and realistic proposal for an immediate increase of key programme envelopes in the long-term EU budget by €39bn.

Former shipbuilding workers from Galicia should receive €2,054,400 in EU aid to help them re-integrate into the labour market, following a Budgets Committee vote on Monday.

Refusing to move at all is not negotiating. MEPs will come back to the table once there is a real will from Council’s side to find an agreement.

Hardly any progress was made during the fifth round of trilateral talks. Council does not show a real will to negotiate Parliament’s key demands.

“We are ready to accelerate the negotiations, but the Council does not show any real will to negotiate our key demands”, says Budgets Committee Chair Johan Van Overtveldt.

During the fourth trilateral talks with Council and Commission, Parliament’s negotiators underline that a lot remains to be done before an acceptable agreement can be reached.

During the third round of talks on Friday, Parliament’s negotiators reiterated their key demands, based on a strong plenary mandate.
