Brexit impact on the environment, public health and food safety
The aim of the public hearing was to assess and discuss the possible impact of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU on the environment, public health and food safety. The hearing was also an opportunity to demonstrate what the EU does to the benefit of its Member States.
On 11 October, a joint ENVI/AGRI public hearing was held on "The Monsanto papers and glyphosate”. Glyphosate is a widely used, but highly controversial plant protection product and the active substance in Monsanto's weed killer Roundup. EFSA and ECHA concluded that glyphosate is safe, while the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified it as “probably carcinogenic to humans”.
At the hearing, the scientific basis for the risk assessment of glyphosate was discussed, as well as the alleged influence of industry on this assessment in the US and the EU. The focus was on the so-called "Monsanto papers": in the context of a US court case brought by plaintiffs claiming that they got cancer due to glyphosate exposure, internal Monsanto emails were released suggesting that the scientific assessment of glyphosate might have been influenced by Monsanto.
The hearing took place against the background of the ongoing debate over the renewal of glyphosate's approval. The current EU approval expires on 15 December 2017, and the Commission has proposed a renewal for ten years. The hearing should provide Parliament with the necessary information to decide on possible follow-up action.

Palm oil and rainforests: what can the EU do to stop deforestation?
The aim of the hearing would be to have an exchange of views between MEPs and experts on the environmental impact of the palm oil industry. This industry is linked to major environmental issues, such as deforestation and habitat degradation, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations.
In addition, the widespread burning of tropical rainforests and peatlands to clear land for palm oil plantations is a major source of carbon pollution, making it a significant contributor to climate change.

Real driving emissions tests
In September 2015, ENVI adopted its position on the Commission proposal of January 2014 on the reduction of pollutant emissions from road vehicles. A key feature of ENVI's position is that test procedures for certain pollutant emissions should reflect real driving conditions, a timely response given the revelation of Volkswagen's use of defeat devices in laboratory emissions testing. This hearing will host expert speakers, aiming to inform ENVI on the development of real driving emissions tests.

EMISSIONS TRADING SYSTEM - ETS
The European Commission presented in July 2015 a legislative proposal to revise the EU emissions trading system for the period after 2020. The reform is the first step in delivering on the EU's target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% domestically by 2030 in line with the 2030 climate and energy policy framework and as part of its contribution to the new global climate deal. The proposal will be analysed by several experts and discussed with the Members of the ENVI Committee.

Investing in nature and biodiversity: challenges and opportunities
This hearing is part of the deliberations of the Committee on the own-initiative report on "The Mid-term review of the EU's Biodiversity Strategy". This strategic own-initiative report will respond to the State of Nature in Europe report, and the mid-term review of the EU's Biodiversity Strategy.
This strategic report will also be Parliament's contribution to the on-going fitness check of the Nature legislation (Birds and Habitats Directives), which is why the adoption of this report is scheduled for December 2015 (to also coincide with the Council's Conclusions).
The aim of this hearing is to have an exchange of views between MEPs and experts not only on the challenges faced by biodiversity in the EU, but also on the opportunities provided by ecosystems, i.e. ecosystem services.
