On 28 September, the IMCO Committee considered the compromise amendments to the draft report on “Addressing product safety in the single market”. The set of draft compromise amendments discussed so far looks at improving the safety for all products, including those offered online and manufactured in third countries, and ensuring the compliance to the EU rules of products entering and circulating in the internal market.

A common understanding is also sought on the need to take into account the digital challenges, in particular AI, IoT and robotics, also through standardisation, while keeping a balanced and risk-based approach to product safety. An effective market surveillance should also be ensured, increasing the resources available to market surveillance authorities and improving their cooperation. The importance of the information to consumers is underlined, including with regard to the recalls of products that should be swiftly and effectively performed.
