Thematic digests are produced specifically to provide background information to the participants of events organised by the European Parliament, such as seminars for journalists and Inter-parliamentary Committee Meetings. They are made up of a list of publications related to the event prepared by Parliament's policy departments. A short description and direct access to each publication is provided.
Empowering parliaments and enforcing citizens’ rights in EU law
The Committees on Legal Affairs and on Petitions is holding an Interparliamentary Committee Meeting on 27.11.18, regarding the empowerment of parliaments and the enforcement of citizens’ rights in the implementation and application of EU law. The debates focus on transposition, implementation and application of EU law, and on the role of complaints to ombudsmen and petitions to parliaments to detect EU law breaches. This Thematic Digest contains relevant publications from the Policy Departments.
Human rights and the external actions of the EU and Member States
The Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an Interparliamentary Committee Meeting on 20.11.18, on the human rights dimension of EU external policies and those of Member States. The discussions will focus on mainstreaming human rights into external action, and on business and human rights. The Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, will speak about sustainable development and human rights. This Thematic Digest contains publications from the Policy Departments on these issues.
State of debate on the future of Europe
The Constitutional Affairs Committee has held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting on 10.10.18, to look into the state of the debate on the future of Europe. Members of national parliaments participated in discussions on this issue together with experts and EU institutional representatives including Constitutional Affairs Committee Chair Danuta Hübner, Juliane Bogner-Strauß for the Austrian Council Presidency, and Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Věra Jourová.
EU Investing in its Transport Networks beyond 2020
The Committee on Transport and Tourism has held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting with representatives of national parliaments to discuss the state of play, the challenges and the future perspectives for the post-2020 period in the field of transport infrastructure investments. Towards the CAP after 2020: The Future of Food and Farming
The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development has held an inter-parliamentary meeting on 24 April 2018, to look into the CAP after 2020, and the future of food and farming. The following was discussed: agriculture policy as a modernised, results-based policy for sustainable growth, environmental protection, quality food, health and jobs, and improving synergies in a multi-level governance process. This Thematic Digest includes publications from the Policy Departments on these issues.
Empowering women and girls in media and ICT - key for the future
On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting on empowering women and girls in media and ICT. The debates focused on the topics of women shaping media, empowerment through digital inclusion, and advancing equality in the digital age. This Thematic Digest includes selected publications by the Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs on with these issues.
The European Agenda on Migration
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting to discuss the European Agenda on Migration, with particular focus on issues related to legal avenues and integration, together with representatives of national parliaments. Ban glyphosate - European Citizens’ Initiative
The Committee on Environment, Public health and Food Safety held a hearing on the European Citizens’ Initiative “Ban glyphosate and protect people and the environment from toxic pesticides”, on 20.11.17. This ECI called for a ban on glyphosate, a reform of the pesticide approval procedure, and EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use. This Thematic Digest provides selected policy departments publications prepared to support the committees in their work on this topic.
The future of Cohesion Policy
The Committee on Regional Development held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting to discuss the future of Cohesion Policy post 2020, on 22 November 2017 in Brussels. Representatives of national parliaments were invited to participate in discussions on the opportunities, the challenges and the next steps to be taken.
