On September 19th 2016, the UN General Assembly hosted a High-level summit in New York City to address the topic of large movements of refugees and migrants. The Summit adopted a proposal for a better international response on these matters, called the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.

The European Parliament was present at this Summit, with an ad-hoc delegation of 3 Members from the LIBE Committee, with Mrs Cecilia WIKSTRÖM, as Head of the EP delegation.
The New York Declaration provides that negotiations leading to an international conference in 2018 would follow aiming to adopt two global compacts: a Global compact on refugees and a Global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.
At their meeting on June 1st, 2017, the LIBE Coordinators approved a set of actions to follow up the process leading to the adoption of the 2 global compacts.
