The next ENVI Committee meetings will take place on Thursday 1 October from 09.00 to 12.30 (09.00-11.00 Joint committee meeting ENVI-CONT).

The calendar of committee meeting dates during the COVID-19 period had to be adapted.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities.

On Monday and Thursday, ENVI Members will vote on the first ENVI legislative own-initiative report on an EU legal framework to halt and reverse EU-driven global deforestation on the basis of article 225 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

This study provides an overview of the current state-of-play in Europe in respect to the fight against cancer. It focuses in particular on four main areas: causation of cancer; cancer screening and early diagnosis; access to cancer treatment, care and research; and rare and childhood cancers. It provides key findings and recommendations in each of these areas.

On 10-11 September, the ENVI committee voted on the so-called Climate Law, a legal framework proposed by the Commission in March 2020 to establish the 2050 climate neutrality goal and prepare the EU climate target update for 2030. Jytte Guteland, rapporteur for ENVI, had published her draft report on 29 April.

The workshop brought together four leading, independent experts in the field of deforestation from two renowned institutions (Environment Agency Austria and Cambridge Econometrics), in order to inform the ENVI Committee Members of the most important concerns in this area and to provide a forum for discussion. Due to the on-going COVID-19 working modalities, the webinar was held in remote format on Thursday, 10th September 2020 from 14h00 – 16h00 on the WebEx platform.

On 7 September, ENVI Members debated with Sandra Gallina, Deputy Director General of DG SANTE on the state of play of the EU vaccines strategy and the Vaccines Advance Purchase Agreements. The aim of the European Vaccines Strategy, adopted by the Commission last June, aims to secure for all European citizens high-quality, safe, effective and affordable vaccines within 12 to 18 months.
