At its meeting of 22 September 2020 the Committee examined a petition regarding the situation of foreign-language lecturers in Italy, in particular the respect for acquired rights of ex-foreign lecturers (ex-lettori) who have become CELs (collaboratori esperti linguistici). The petition has originally been submitted in 1998. Since then, the Commission launched a Pilot case which has been ongoing for 9 years.

At the meeting of 22 September 2020, the Committee heard a petition calling for the introduction of government or EU-sponsored quick COVID-19 testing for tourists travelling to any EU member state and for efficient contact-tracing procedures. The petitioner pointed out that the pandemic has heavily affected the travel and tourism industries and that travel companies have difficulties operating due to safety concerns and to inconsistencies or restrictions across Member States.

On 22 September 2020, Members analysed a petition requesting clarification from the European Parliament as to whether court proceedings in Member States should take into account provisions relating to the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and EU State aid legislation.

At its meeting of 3 September, the Committee received the European Ombudsman (EO), Ms Emily O’Reilly, who presented her 2019 Annual Report. Members had the opportunity to exchange views with the Ombudsman on the progress of her work for the past year.

On 3 September 2020, Members examined a petition on discrimination against journalists and restrictions on freedom of expression in Poland. Among other things, the petition argues that journalists opposing the incumbent government in Poland are victims of undue dismissals and harassment and are deprived or adequate complaint avenues. In addition, it highlights the restrictions on freedom of expression in Poland and calls for a more in-depth discussion on the matter.
