In February 2016, the Commission proposed an update to its Security of Gas Supply Regulation. The purpose is to ensure that all Member States put in place appropriate tools to prepare for and manage the effects of a gas shortage due to a disruption in supply or exceptionally high demand. Under the proposed rules, regional cooperation and coordination on gas would be improved both to prevent and to mitigate supply shocks, as well as to ensure solidarity in the event of an emergency.
