Hearing: Cross-border family disputes: safeguarding children’s rights
On the 19 November, the JURI Committee with Elisabeth Morin-Chartier MEP and EP Coordinator on Children’s Rights hosted a public hearing on safeguarding the rights of the child in cross-border family disputes. The event was organised in the context of the work of the Coordinator in cross-border parental child abduction and family disputes.
The hearing was webstreamed.

Hearing on "Collective redress: towards improved access to justice for all?"
On 10 October, the JURI Committee had a presentation and a hearing on collective redress (15.30-17.00). The event was organised in the context of the current parliamentary work on the Commission’s proposal for a directive on representative actions for the protection of the collective interests of consumers.
The Members of JURI Committee had first the presentation of a study and then had the possibility to hear experts and had a discussion in the format of a hearing.

Hearing on "Conversions, Divisions and Digitalisation - new EU company law tools"
On 21 June 2018, the Committee on Legal Affairs held a public hearing on “Conversions, Divisions and Digitalisation - new EU company law tools”. At the hearing both academic and interest groups views were represented. The Members discussed with experts the two new tools - conversions and divisions - proposed to be added to the company law toolbox by the Commission.

Hearing on "The Hague Judgments Project"
The Committee on Legal Affairs held a public hearing on ‘The Hague Judgments Convention’ in Brussels, on 24 April 2018, from 15.00-16.30. The hearing was aimed at bringing together Members of the European Parliament, Commission representatives, the Permanent Bureau of the Hague Conference and stakeholders with a view to discussing the ongoing negotiations on a world-wide Convention on the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters.

Hearing on "Collective redress in the EU: the state of play and next steps"
The Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) held a public hearing on ‘Collective redress in the EU: the state of play and next steps' in Brussels, on 21 February 2018, from 11-12:30. The hearing assembled Members of the European Parliament, Commission representatives, stakeholders and an academic with a view to discussing the recently published Commission report on the implementation of the 2013 Recommendation on common principles for injunctive and compensatory collective redress mechanisms in
The Recommendation established principles which should be applicable in relation to violations of rights granted under Union law across all policy fields and in relation to both injunctive and compensatory relief. It follows from the Recommendation that all Member States should have collective redress systems at national level.
According to paragraph 41 of the EU 2013 Collective Redress recommendation, "the Commission should assess the implementation of the Recommendation on the basis of practical experience by 26 July 2017 at the latest. In this context, the Commission should in particular evaluate its impact on access to justice, on the right to obtain compensation, on the need to prevent abusive litigation and on the functioning of the single market, on SMEs, the competitiveness of the economy of the European Union and consumer trust.

Hearing on corporate social responsibility
The Committee on Legal Affairs, as the committee responsible for company law, decided to organise a hearing on corporate social responsibility with the aim of following up on the most recent developments in the field.

Public hearing on Civil Procedure Project
On 12 July, the JURI Committee organised a hearing on The ELI/UNIDROIT Civil Procedure Project: state of play and next steps. Ms Diana Wallis, the President of the European Law Institute, and Dr Eva Storskrubb presented the first consolidated draft rules on ‘Access to information and evidence’, ‘Service and due notice of proceedings’ and ‘Provisional and protective measures’ and discussed the next steps of the project. The debate took place with the participation of the Commission.

Hearing on The Insolvency Proposal
On 20 June 2017, from 11.00 to 12.30, the Committee on Legal Affairs held a public hearing on Hearing on The Insolvency Proposal. The aim of the hearing was that Members should acquire a more complete and detailed understanding of the impact that the proposal may have on the different stakeholders concerned: debtors, creditors, SMEs, workers, practitioners in the field, etc. with a view to its improvement.
