This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It is a milestone document which over the decades has inspired a rich body of legally binding international human rights treaties.

The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU's policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew this unshakeable commitment to the subject, the European Parliament held a High Level Conference to reflect on the core principles of human rights as set out in the UDHR: universality, inter-dependence and indivisibility, while at the same time addressing new challenges in a global and digital world

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani opened the conference in the presence of Vice President/High Representative Federica Mogherini, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, General Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda, and several other dignitaries.
