The next ENVI Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, 28 October from 13.45 to 15.45 and on Thursday, 29 October from 9.00 to 11.00 and from 13.45 to 14.45.

The calendar of committee meeting dates during the COVID-19 period had to be adapted.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

The introduction of a WTO-compatible carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) is touted as a key element of the European Green Deal. It will serve to ensure that, as the EU continues to increase its climate ambition, its partners also play ball.

EU health programme

On 13 and 14 October the ENVI committee voted on its draft report on the so-called “EU4Health Programme” to enhance health promotion and resilience of health systems across the EU. The report was adopted with 74 votes in favour, 5 against and 1 abstentions. The draft Report reinstates the ambitious funding of EUR 9.4 billion, as originally proposed by the Commission.

ENVI Public Hearing

On Monday 12 October, from 13.45 to 15.40, the ENVI held a public hearing on “Prospects and Perils for the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in the Future EU-UK Relationship”. Committee Members heard from academic, NGO and industry experts about possible divergences between EU and UK standards in the areas of the environment, public health and food safety and consider policy measures that might be adopted to combat any adverse effects.
