Adaptation to Climate change
ENVI

On 21 February 2020, the ENVI Committee published a draft motion for a resolution on the EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change. As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission aims to put forward a new Adaptation Strategy in early 2021, building on the current one, which was adopted in 2013 and positively evaluated in 2018. The strategy focuses on adaptation actions at the EU level including support for adaptation at other levels, i.e. the EU Member States, regions, and cities.

The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted an ongoing problem: shortages of certain medicines in the EU. The European Parliament is proposing a series of measures to end this increasing but largely silent problem.
ENVI

Shortage of medicines is a long-standing problem in the EU that has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, with direct negative consequences for the health and safety of patients. In July 2020, the ENVI Committee adopted a report on shortage of medicines, calling for the EU to regain its health independence and for better coordination between Member States to address medicine shortages. The report was adopted by the Parliament by 663 votes to 23, with 10 abstentions, in September 2020.

Worldwide, forests are being lost at the alarming rate of 800 football fields per hour. With deforestation being a critical contributor to climate change and a leading cause of biodiversity loss, it is becoming increasingly clear that a sustainable future cannot be achieved without tackling deforestation and taking measures to protect- and sustainably manage forests.

Union Civil Protection Mechanism
ENVI

Through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), the Union supports, coordinates and supplements the action of Member States in the field of civil protection to prevent, prepare for and respond to natural and man-made disasters within and outside the Union. During the COVID-19 crisis, measures were taken in the framework of the UCPM: for example the repatriation of more than 48,000 EU citizens of the procurement of key medical equipment for Member States in difficulty.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
ENVI

The European Commission adopted its Communication on the European Green Deal in December 2019. One of the key policies and measures that would be needed to achieve the Green Deal is the proposal for a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM)

European Climate Law
ENVI

The Commission’s proposal for the first European Climate Law is the cornerstone of the European Green Deal and aims to write into law for the very first time the goal for Europe’s economy and society to become climate-neutral by 2050. The proposal, adopted on 4 March 2020, establishes an overall framework for achieving that objective. It updates the Union 2030 target to at least 55% net greenhouse gas emissions reduction, which is based on a detailed impact assessment published on 17 Sept 2020.

Real Driving Emissions and NOx limits
ENVI

Euro 5 and 6 Regulation (EC) No 715/2007 of the European Parliament and the Council sets the emission limits for cars for regulated pollutants, in particular nitrogen oxides (NOx, i.e. the combined emissions of NO and NO2) to 80 mg/km. The need to adopt the current proposal results directly from the Judgement of the General Court judgment of 13 December 2018. In the Judgement the Court finds that Regulation (EU) 2016/646 (an implementing act adopted under the Regulatory Procedure with Scrutiny)

Health Working Group
ENVI

The Health Working Group consists of a forum for MEPs to discuss issues that affect the health of Europe's citizens. Many decisions are made at the European Parliament which affect health, whether it's nutritional labelling on food, health warnings on tobacco, research into new cancer treatments or cross border organ donations.
