Next AGRI meetings - 2020

In the context of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The Conference of Presidents has updated the EP's calendar of activities to introduce an extraordinary plenary session on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April in Brussels, and additional dates for remote meetings for EP governing bodies, committees and political groups.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next AGRI Committee meetings will take place in Brussels via videoconference on 6 July (9.00-11.00) - 7 July (12.00-12.10 / in camera from 12.10 to 13.00) and 15 July.

AGRI Members will discuss the situation of the EU beef, veal and poultry sectors with EC representatives. This discussion is to take place while beef and broiler prices paid to producers are going down. Farmers concerns are accentuated by the impact of EU trade agreements, the prospect of Brexit and the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies that will affect the European meat sector.

A third trilogue on the Transitional regulation took place on 30 June. EP negotiator Ms Elsi Katainen and the Croatian Presidency managed to secure a partial agreement on the text. The agreement covers everything except the administrative deadlines and MFF figures, which will be inserted once they are known and once the EP gives its consent to the MFF decision by the European Council.

Germany is the first of the new Trio of Presidencies, with Portugal and Slovenia, to take over the reins of the rotating Presidency - on July 1. Ms Julia Klöckner, Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, will attend the meeting of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development on 15 July to present the priorities of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the field of agriculture.

In the context of the European Green Deal, the Commission published on 20 May the Communication «EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030: Bringing nature back into our lives » strategy. This Communication pointing out that nature is in a state of crisis, underlines that Biodiversity is also crucial for safeguarding EU and global food security. Biodiversity loss threatens our food systems, putting our food security and nutrition at risk.

In the context of the European Green Deal, the Commission published on 20 May the « Farm to Fork » strategy. This Communication sets out a vision for a European Food system until 2030. It covers a wide range of policies such as agriculture, food safety, environment and climate change. By adopting a Food system approach, it acknowledges the mutual dependency and interconnectedness of all actors from farmers/producers to citizens/consumers.
