Cambodia: the case of opposition leader Kem Sokha, 16 March 2023

Parliament calls on the authorities in Cambodia to immediately and unconditionally release the opposition leader Kem Sokha as well as all opposition activists convicted or held in custody on politically motivated charges.MEPs urge the authorities to ensure free and fair elections in July 2023, allowing all political parties to carry out an equal, free and transparent electoral campaign under a more inclusive and transparent National Election Committee. The largest opposition party, Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), must be reinstated immediately to be able to participate in the 2023 elections.The resolution also calls for VOD, one of Cambodia's last independent media that has been closed in February, to be reinstated immediately. It urges the Council to adopt targeted sanctions, under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.

EU political relations with ASEAN (3 October 2017)

The European Parliament adopted by 563 votes to 46, with 66 abstentions, a resolution on EU political relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). [...]

Strategic partnership: Members recommended upgrading relations between the EU and ASEAN to a strategic partnership. Noting that the EU is the first provider of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the ASEAN region, Members suggested strengthening economic and political relations while underlining the opportunities for cooperation in implementing the sustainable development goals.

Cooperation could be strengthened to address global challenges such as climate change, international crime and terrorism, border management, maritime security, financial sector development, transparency and macroeconomic policies. [...]

Statelessness in South and South East Asia (13 June 2017)

The European Parliament adopted by 571 votes to 24, with 34 abstentions, a resolution on statelessness in South and South East Asia.

Parliament recalled that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) enshrines the right to a nationality and the right not to be arbitrarily deprived of one's nationality is enshrined in Article 15 of UDHR, as well as in other international human rights instruments.

The right to nationality has been enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for close to seventy years, yet for millions of people this is still seemingly unattainable. [...]

Overall, Parliament expressed concern about the millions of cases of statelessness all around the world, in particular in South and South East Asia, and expressed their solidarity with stateless persons.
