Delegation for relations with the United States (D-US)

The inter-parliamentary relationship between the European Parliament and the United States Congress is the longest and most intensive in the history of the European Parliament, dating back continuously to 1972. In 1999, the parliamentary relationship was deepened further when both delegations decided to launch the Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue (TLD).

The TLD constitutes the formal response of the European Parliament and the US Congress to the commitment in the New Transatlantic Agenda (NTA) of 1995, to enhance parliamentary ties between the European Union and the United States.

Subsequently, TLD activities expanded in order to include videoconferences, special working groups on subjects of particular interest, as well as a facilitating role for direct exchanges between legislative committees of the European Parliament and the US Congress.

TLD representatives were also part of the Advisory Group instituted within the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC), launched by the EU and the US in 2007. From 2012 onwards the TLD focused a lot of its attention on the negotiations for a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

Aside from trade and economic issues, foreign, security and defence policies have also always been very high on the TLD agenda. Other transatlantic topics regularly discussed include energy, the digital economy, counterterrorism, cyber security and data policy.

The most recent meeting between Parliament and the US Congress, the 83rd, took place from 26 to 28 February 2019 in Washington DC.
