Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the website of the Delegation for Relations with Japan.

This standing body of the European Parliament was created in 1979 and has held annual inter-parliamentary meetings (IPMs) with its counterparts from the Japanese Diet since that date. I have had the privilege of being the Chairman of this delegation since October 2014.

Parliamentarians on both sides have exchanged views on areas such as trade, economic and financial issues, environment and climate change, security in the Northeast Asia and the Pacific region, human rights, cooperation in the field of science, technology & innovation.

Japan is a key strategic partner of the European Union. The inter-parliamentary dialogue is one instrument, among others, to further strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation on global issues.

Besides inter-parliamentary meetings, MEPs meet with officials and think tanks on a regular basis. These delegation meetings are sometimes live-streamed and you are most welcome to follow them online.
