The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in the Maldives.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ECR, ALDE, Greens/EFA, GUE/NGL and EFDD groups.

Parliament expressed its deep concern over the serious and deteriorating political and human rights situation in the Maldives, and the increasingly authoritarian rule of President Yameen and his Government.

Situation in Maldives, 5 October 2017

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in the Maldives.

The resolution was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ALDE, GUE/NGL, ECR, EFDD and Greens/EFA groups.

Parliament deplored the crackdown on political opponents in the Maldives, and called on the government to drop all charges against former president Mohamed Nasheed and to release, immediately and unconditionally, all those being held for political reasons, including Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim. It called on the Maldives government to ensure the full independence and impartiality of the judiciary, and called on the Supreme Court of the Maldives to immediately revoke the suspension of those of the 56 lawyers suspended in September to whom the measure still applies.

Parliament called on the EU to make full use of all instruments at its disposal in order to promote respect for human rights, including by considering introducing temporary individual targeted sanctions against those undermining human rights. [...]

Situation in the Maldives, 17 December 2015

The European Parliament adopted by 563 votes to 31, with 32 abstentions, a resolution on the situation in the Maldives.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ECR, ALDE, GUE/NGL, Green/EFA and EFDD groups.

Deploring the crackdown on political opponents, the Government of the Maldives is called upon to release, immediately and unconditionally, former president Mohamed Nasheed and other political prisoners. It reiterated its gross dissatisfaction with the serious irregularities in the trial of former president Mohamed Nasheed and called on the Maldivian Government to guarantee full impartiality of the judiciary and to respect due process of law and the right to a fair, impartial and independent trial; stresses the need to depoliticise the country's judiciary and security services.

Regression of citizens' rights: Parliament recalled that media freedom is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy. [...]

Situation in the Maldives, 30 April 2015

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in the Maldives.

The text adopted in plenary had been jointly tabled by the EPP, S&D, ECR, ALDE, GUE/NGL, Greens/EFA and EFDD groups.

Expressing its grave concern about increasing tendencies towards authoritarian rule in the Maldives, the crackdown on political opponents and intimidation of media and civil society, Parliament called on all parties to refrain from any action that may further aggravate this crisis, and to respect democracy and the rule of law.

Lastly, the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and EEAS are urged to continue to monitor closely the political situation in the Maldives and to play a proactive role in the EU's bilateral relations with the country and in international multilateral fora in order to achieve stability, strengthen democracy and the rule of law, and ensure full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in the country.
